How to project authority in an authentic way

read-on

Have you ever thought (or been told?) that you should speak with more authority, so that others “take you more seriously?” Do you sometimes feel like you need to prove that you know what you’re talking about?

🙄 You’re not alone.

While I don’t believe in “should”s…

… that you “should” do anything or be anyone for the approval of others…

I do believe it’s essential to own what you know. To feel like you can communicate with authority and speak from a genuinely empowered place.

Not just so other people take you more seriously, but so that YOU take you more seriously…

It’s your birthright to trust your own voice.

And here’s the deal:

If you wanna speak like someone who knows their sh*t… without having to:

  • Memorize your lines
  • Over-prepare
  • Or prove that you and your ideas are worth taking seriously…

You gotta check in with what your body language is communicating about how powerful you are.

Check out this video to see how one small body language adjustment can change the impression you make on others:

👉 So how can you embody more authority in your day-to-day communications?

Step #1: Recognize whether you come off as less “authoritative” than you mean to…

It’s a spectrum, with super authoritative (verging on authoritarian 👎) on the one side, and super approachable (verging on people-pleasery), on the other.  We all tend to lean in one direction more than the other. Here’s how to figure out where you fall on that spectrum:

  1. Watch yourself on video. I know, cringe, but trust me: there’s no quicker way to see how others *actually* perceive you than to watch yourself on camera.
  2. Phone a friend.  Ask a trusted coworker to observe you next time you’re communicating in a team meeting or on a Zoom call. Tell them that you’re working on exuding more authority when you speak, and after the meeting, ask them how you did.

Step #2: Commit to sitting or standing “in your power”

And remember: it’s not about faking anything…

It’s about embodying the way you want to feel (and be seen). Think of it as igniting your personal power from the inside out. ✨
